Do I need a permit and fence?

Most swim spas need a permit and you will also need a fence (or “safety barrier”). If your spa is above ground however you may be able to limit the fencing to the step area only. Obtaining permits is best handled by an independent certifier but if you’ve got the time and can accept possible delays you can deal directly through your local council.

Does the spa meet Australian standards?

Many cheap swim spas that are sold via the internet are being imported without the necessary Australian approvals, leaving you with a spa than cannot be legally repaired by any serviceperson (assuming you can get replacement parts). You should insist that the retailer shows you a valid copy of the approval or you will end up with a spa that can’t even be used. You should also check that the spa has a metal compliance plate with an approval number on it.
